When I came across Japanese artist Mariko Kusumoto’s delicately detailed necklaces, I thought I was peering into another world. One filled with whimsy, lightness and magic.
At first glimpse, you would think these pieces are made from environmental treasures that were found in nature. Familiar forms of sea urchins, shells and flourishing anemones instantly came to my mind.
After all, they look so organic and ever- so fragile, like majestic organisms plucked from right under the sea.
Kusumoto is inspired by anything that may stimulate, inthrall and delight the senses, when creating her designs.
She does this by heating translucent fabric, then molding and shaping it into perfect, synthetic magical eye-gasms.

The level of sophistication is near perfection, fit for a mermaid queen to wear and style.
If you had one of Mariko’s pieces, where would you wear it out first?
This sunday is quite the exciting day indeed. The popular mermaid school from Montreal Aquasirene is now opening it’s new location in Toronto on Queen St!
As an employee for their new division, I thought I would share the news since it’s a unique event and opportunity to not only get in shape by swimming in a monofin, but also fulfilling your dreams of becoming a mermaid for a day (maybe longer if you take a tail home :P)
We all know how expensive silicone, latex, even fabric tails can cost online, so it’s a great place to start and get used to the idea of swimming in a tail before you make the commitment of going custom.
Personally, as someone that’s swam in both fabric tails and silicone, I can tell you that you want..nay, NEED to start off with a lighter material in the beginning, especially if you are not a trained swimmer. Silicone in itself is extremely heavy, and then you have the additional weight of the monofin. At least with the fabric tails the weight is only felt around and on the feet.
Here’s some more super adorable photos of merbaes at the Montreal academy:
So if you’re in Toronto make sure you check out the new mermaid school at the Jimmie Simpson Pool 😉 XOX
I’ve always loved LUSH! From the products’ deliciously fragrant aromas to their magical workings, it’s the prefect home-spa brand.
Recently, I was really excited to find out that they created ocean inspired beauty items for all those city merbaes out there that need a little TLC.
Gives your locks an instant boost of nutritional goodies and beachy- tousled waves. A must have for all those mermaids with flatter or stiffer manes, since it adds a nice bouncy feel to the hair.
Ocean Salt Cleanser
Not only does the colour remind you of a foamy, frothy ocean wave it also gives your skin a supple, softer glow. The minerals will scrub away any dead skin cells and enchant you with it’s refreshing coconut scent.
Shimmy Shimmy is a massage body butter that smells like vanilla cupcakes. The glitter and shimmer applies evenly on the skin and provides a beautiful glow. You can even put some in your hair!
