Mermaid Monday: Splash Into Tarte’s New Mermaid Collection

IMG_5799

I’ve been waiting for this collection to drop for a while, patiently, twiddling my fins, and now it’s finally HERE! (Yes, I am very excited if you couldn’t tell). The best part though- is that I got the three items I wanted before they sold out!

I had seen similar no-name brands release their own version of mermaid brushes, but the bristles looked questionable. As you’ve guessed I’m not a huge fan of buying products or cosmetics of a lower quality, even if the packaging is super adorbs- what are ya going to end up doing with them if they don’t fulfill your make up needs?

But this collection ticked everything off my list:

-Vegan

-Pro quality

-Mermaid Appeal

+ enchanting, mermazing, shimmery…I could go on.

So as promised, here’s my full review on my fave items from Tarte’s mermaid collection : The Be A Mermaid And Make Waves Palette, The Mermaid To Minutes Brush Set and The Glitter Gel.

IMG_5699.JPG

The Brush Set

If this is your first brush set or if you’re adding this to your growing collection, these will be your new go to’s.

633F9E8A-DE7D-4845-97AA-3F68D2451995.jpg

First off the bristles are super soft, I played with each and everyone and they all deliver great results. There’s 3 face brushes and 2 eye brushes. I usually re-use my personal face brushes and just clean the same one in between shades (I have a different kit for my makeup clients), but it’s nice having 3 options to paint with. It feels like a luxury.

I used the face brushes to paint on the glitter gel, which I review below *though a note to you merbbz : make sure you clean them well as the gel tends to grip to the hairs.

The base also feels really secure- they don’t feel flimsy or cheap, and love seeing that ombre tail shine under the light when I’m doing my application. It adds such fun to my routine!

The eye brushes are great too because you can use them to smudge, deposit and blend colors together.

The Palette

Omg. Where do I start? This is the best eyeshadow palette i’ve ever laid eyes on and it’s not just because of the punny names of each shade (seriously, I feel like Tarte knew exactly my mer-vocabulary and encapsulated it all into this product).

IMG_5801.JPG

The colors are pigmented, blendable, buildable and feel buttery smooth and best of all: extremely wearable.

Don’t you hate it when you buy a collection and can only use like 3 of the 10 eyeshadows from the palette? Well, that’s definitely not the case with this palette.

33d47910-20d5-4db9-b669-f4dcb0aa08f6.jpg

Maybe it’s because I’m a huge wearer or metallic nudes, but these shades are literally perfection and give off that beautiful wet look while keeping your lids smooth and dry. I’ve even convinced my nude eye loving BFF to splurge on this palette.

Tarte also put in some beautiful matte shades for accentuating and complimenting those rich metallics which I so appreciate.

The Glitter Gel

OK- so those who know me, know that glitter runs in my blood. I have in bath products, body lotions, hair sprays, clothes, lipsticks, you name it.. I probably have it somewhere in my treasure cove.

But this glitter gel is positively fin-tastic and it’s not just because of the packaging ( which is obviously, adorable ).

IMG_5800.JPG

The gel keeps the glitter and shimmer specks on your skin for hours on end, no loose fall out or sweating it off – I’ve even tested it underwater, and it stays on!

IMG_5764.jpg

It casts a beautiful moonbeam sheen that makes you look hella magical, while packing on some scattered scale like pailettes.

A221F80E-AAA9-4339-B397-12001BCAF3D0.jpg

I placed it on my collarbones, and on the outside of my eye where I would use highlight, I also played around with it under my eye and in the inner corner, though I always say be safe with glitter near your eyes.

Facetune_01-04-2018-22-40-06.jpg

Naturally, it was a nightmare to take off at the end of the day ( but hey- why would you want to take it off?). My reco is to take some tape and almost as if in a waxing motion, peel the glitter off areas of your skin after wiping down with a makeup remover, that really takes care of those stubborn pieces. The smell is also.. Not so lovely, it reminds me of paste or glue.

Hot tip: If you remove most of the glitter before showering, you’re also helping the environment as glitter can seep into our water and become impossible to extract ( yay!).

SO if I had to choose and prioritize my faves, I would rank the palette as #1, then followed by the brush set and finally the glitter gel. The glitter gel is a nice to have- especially for those of you who perform and do events, but it’s a bit harder to work with on a day to day.

Mermaid Monday: Say Shello To Your New Beach Bff

Screen Shot 2017-12-18 at 11.27.45 PM

It’s been a while since my last post- but I’m back to review one of my absolute fave new backpacks from Isabelle Batz that’s shaped like a fin!

At first glance, the material is shimmery, deep and metallic, to mimic the look and feel of scales under water. But when you graze over the top of the fabric, the sequins flip to reveal a different shade – color changing goodness! I’ve seen this before on viral videos with mermaid pillowcases, but never on a bag, so naturally, I was instantly hooked (no pun intended here).

image1 (11).JPG

The shades reflect the depths of the ocean’s many layers, starting with the shallow turquoise sinking into a deep sapphire blue and eventually fading into black.

The bag itself is pretty spacious as well, there is an inside pocket to fit your guarded treasures like lipgloss, your iPhone or wallet.

This accessory is super lightweight even when it fills up to the top, the strings keep it balanced and fully supported. The inside and backing look and feel like neoprene, a design touch to keep it water resistant.

For all you merbbz seeking the perfect new accessory to transform your festival or beach styling this bag will be your new bff. You can shop it here, from NYC designer Isabelle Batz.

Dudeoir x Mermaids

If you’ve never heard of Joshua Varozza listen up merbaes, because this guy definitely caught my attention like a fish out of water!

You may remember him from his previous epic photo-shoot collection that went viral, it had an America theme. But now he dove a bit deeper and decided to come out with this little number.

I can’t decide if it’s funny or cute, but one thing’s for sure – Merman Power!

Would personally love to see more photo-shoots like this even if they are meant for humour, what about you my fishy friends?

Arctic Mermaid Hair Transformation!

If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll probably know that I’ve had a variety of blue-green shades for over 8 years now.

It’s been my “go-to” hairstyle for as long as I can remember. My most recent shade being a pastel mint, which was diluted from a deep emerald green.

it’s been a long magical journey… But last week I decided to metamorphose into an icy mermaid!

Here’s a special look into my day at Good Day Hair Shop

So first of all the salon is SUPER cute, they are located in the heart of downtown Toronto tucked away in Kensington market. They make their own hair products (that are heavenly) and know exactly what’s on with trends and colours.

image (10)

image (12)

Little did I know there are SO many different shades of grey/white and tints, so I decided to let my colourist, Christopher help me choose the right shade.

We started by lifting the entire mint colour from my hair with a lower volume of bleach so as not to damage my poor hair.

Then once my hair was super blonde, we added in some toner + bleach bath to ensure all the colour was out. We then re-added some custom coloured mint to give the subtle halo look. The whole process took about 4 hours.

Christopher was very careful when shampooing my hair and adding the toner, making sure that my hair wouldn’t fry off. We used the Good day hair shop silver fox shampoo and it made my hair feel super soft with the lingering sweet smell of vanilla candy.

The end result: A super cool toned silver with a mint halo

 Styled + extensions added:

I used Good Hair Day Shop‘s exclusive Mermaid Sea Salt Spray to finalize the beachy- wavy look and give my tresses that much needed mer-curl.

image (16)

You can buy their spray in store and it smells absolutely fintastic! It also doubles up as a hair spray. Perfect for those summer festival looks !

image (18)

For silver hair maintenance, they also carry a purple shampoo + conditioner combo.

I would highly recommend the products + the salon and my magical hair colourist Christopher for anyone looking to change up their hair, they do an excellent job and made this mermaid super happy!

This Jewellery Is As Pretty As The Ocean!

When I came across Japanese artist Mariko Kusumoto’s delicately detailed necklaces, I thought I was peering into another world. One filled with whimsy, lightness and magic.

At first glimpse, you would think these pieces are made from environmental treasures that were found in nature. Familiar forms of sea urchins, shells and flourishing anemones instantly came to my mind.

.

After all, they look so organic and ever- so fragile, like majestic organisms plucked from right under the sea.

Kusumoto is inspired by anything that may stimulate, inthrall and delight the senses, when creating her designs.

She does this by heating translucent fabric, then molding and shaping it into perfect, synthetic magical eye-gasms.

The level of sophistication is near perfection, fit for a mermaid queen to wear and style.

If you had one of Mariko’s pieces, where would you wear it out first?

Mermaid Tights: Review Continued..

Hello my Merbaes!

So I am really excited to talk about these fin-tastic tights from Tinkercast that went super viral!

Here you will get an in depth look at the tights through pictures + some quick notes about them, what I like and what I don’t like!

So, here we go.

Here is a quick sneak peek at one of my recent shoots with the amazingly talented Montreal based photographer Marisa Parisella (Glamour MTL) while wearing the tights.

legz.jpg

So as you can see they LOOK and FEEL like my skin because they are sheer tights, that fit you oh so perfectly.

You can rock them with pretty much anything, as I was mentioning in my video, I wore them with a short teddy/lingerie for this pin up inspired shoot and with some rhinestone heels!

Here’s some less fancy shots I took on my camera at home:

IMG_2104

What I like:

-Durable (but you should still be careful when performing physical exercise)

-Lightweight

-Fashionable

-Realistic

-Shimmery!

What I don’t like:

-Sweat/heat trapping behind silicone applications when moving around a lot

That’s pretty much it, really!

I absolutely love them, they are so sparkly and magical, and honestly since these are considered a wearable prosthetic, the price tag is actually not as bad as it initially seems. If you don’t have the $ for a full on silicone tail, these could be a great, unique alternative as well!

I will do another blog post checking in and updating you lovelies on how they hold up, but so far so good!

These Rainbow Highlighters Are Everything

Highlighters come in all shapes and sizes, you have your creams, your sticks, your liquids, your powders,

but now for the first time ever..

RAINBOW HIGHLIGHTERS! (Are you as excited as I am?)

iKaV3uF

Obviously this is not for your everyday mer-bae look but if you’re like me and addicted to those shimmering eye-catching marvels that we call highlighters, I would definitely pick one of these up for safe keeping.

I found these on Etsy’s BitterLaceBeauty and she makes them in all colours if rainbow is too out there for you.

Like this pearlescent shade with a blueish purple tint to it- totally reminds me of a unicorn mane floating in the wind.

Or maybe blue is more of your colour..

They even have a shade that’s perfect for a subtle rose glow look,

But for someone who has cool undertones and wants to sparkle in lavender, this one is definitely calling my name… And of course it’s called “New Seashells”.

And, finally, for LOLS.

Which one will you add to your list this year? And no, that cute angry cat is not for sale.

Dismaland: Your New Favorite Nightmare

I came across Dismaland today, created by talented and unique graffiti artist Banksy, and it was glorious.

A way to perfectly describe this magical place is a beautiful nightmare. An apocalyptic fantasy world where morbid reality shadows and looms over our favourite characters from our childhood storybooks and classic movies.

Though some parts may be creepy and even borderline horrifying, it offers a humorous satirical punk rock commentary on our beloved childhood memories and characters. Banksy made sure to handpick his fave artists to collaborate on the adult amusement park, with works showcased from Damien Herst and Jenny Holzer.

Obviously the first image that caught my eye was the one of Ariel, our cherished little mermaid.

Now for something more disturbing than a rippled glitch of a mermaid, a carousel butcher, hangin’ out. What’s up with those lasagna boxes? Wooden horse lasagna I suppose.

Nothing is more frightening than the idea of death, but somehow seeing this Grim Reaper riding along with that dopey grin gets me going.

And who can forget the epitome of princess femininity, Cinderella, who seems to have had one too many drinks at the ball before rushing home to meet her midnight deadline.

What are your thoughts on Banky’s Dismaland? I for one would definitely love the opportunity to prance around the park, maybe while blasting The Cure on my Iphone.
